It is endemic to Chile and other South American countries. This evergreen tree is fast growing, and is an extremely hardy species.

Fully exposed to sun, flat parts or slopes with northern exposure.
Resists occasional, not prolonged frosts down to about -5°c.
From secano areas, where the dry season lasts 3-5 months and rainfall reaches 400-800 mm/year, concentrated in winter, to extremely arid areas, with very rare rainfall. The dry season lasts 8-10 months and in some years there may be no rainfall, which may be <100 mm/year.
Preferably poor, arid soils
From Copiapó (III Region) to Valdivia (Los Ríos Region).
