It is a woody tree native to the Central Andes of Peru, Chile, Bolivia and northwestern Argentina. It is one of the most abundant species in the Americas with a wide distribution in subtropical and tropical areas of South America. It is a drought and high temperature tolerant species. It is long-lived, hardy and perennial, although it does not tolerate frost well. For these reasons it is cultivated all over the world.
